1999 - Beryl and John Saunders were the winners of the 1998, 2001 and 2003, Hampshire Federation of Horticultural Societies competition for allotments of 15 rods and over.

They had been gardening since 1990 and the allotment had given them a tremendous amount of pleasure. Sadly John died in July 2006 but Beryl, not ready to hang up her gardening gloves just yet has decided to carry on. They would like to see the tradition of allotment gardening maintained and therefore hope that by taking a look at their plot it will encourage more people to have 'a go' and take up vacant plots. Their plot at Elson in Gosport covers 25 rods but smaller ones are available from 5 rods. (1 rod, or sometimes known as pole or perch = 30.25 square yards)

When first taking on a plot the initial clearing and laying out can be very hard work as most plots do tend to get very overgrown if not tended to regularly. However, do not be put off, once this has been completed and you can start planting, the rewards can be tremendous. Not only will you have the pleasure of eating your own produce, you will meet a cross section of allotment gardeners who in the main are a friendly bunch, willing to pass on a wealth of knowledge and experience, with tips and advice and without whose help we would not have the award-winning plot we have today. Our sincere thanks to all concerned.

The plots have changed over the years so I hope you will enjoy following our progress by reading the Diaries and enjoy viewing the photographs. Beryl.

The next two pictures are of the last part of our site which was added in October '98 and intended to be a quiet place to relax after a 'hard days labour'. John excelled in laying out the plot while Beryl enjoyed planting with enthusiasm.
